Sniper/Spy Update Wrap-Up

Posted Wednesday 27 May 2009 By: Yourcatch22 | Post a comment

With the Sniper/Spy Update officially released, the folks over at Valve have posted one last update to wrap everything up. Along with a final Bonus Page, the team has also taken the time to give an explanation to the controversial item drop system in the Official Team Fortress Blog. We posted some of it below, but for more checkout the New Blog Update.
"Why did we build a new system?
With our first four class updates we were tying the new weapons for each class to a set of achievements. Our intention was to make a set of achievements that eventually all players would get, and would be fun to get along the way. In some cases we did a good job at this (Scout), and in some cases we did a bad one (Medic). Across all of the class packs we were disappointed in the number of people that got to play with the new weapons, and feedback from the community was generally not favorable with this approach."

Jarate Juice And Free Weekend Announced

Posted Thursday 21 May 2009 By: Yourcatch22 | Post a comment

Continuing with its daily Sniper/Spy Updates, Valve has unveiled its newest sniper unlockable weapon, Jarate. Jarate is a thrown jar that splashes upon impact. When splashed on enemies, they take 35% more damage for a period of time. Jumping in water will wash off Jarate. Plus you can always use to short out Spies’ cloaking devices. When used on teammates, Jarate will extinguish any fire effects. Today the Valve team also released 35 new achievements along with a great comic further explaining Jarate and its uses. Check this out and more at the Sniper/Spy Update Page.

In the latest installment of the Spy Update, we get an up close look at the Spy's newest unlockable revolver, The Ambassador. It proves to be more accurate and powerful than the original revolver, but as a trade off for the extra punch, the weapon requires a cool down before it can be fired again.

Get Ready For The Spy Update

Posted Saturday 16 May 2009 By: Yourcatch22 | Post a comment

Well it appears the Sniper won't be getting all the attention in the upcoming Team Fortress 2 Update. According to its Day 4 announcement, Valve has revealed that the Spy will also be receiving some new unlockable items, such as the "Dead Ringer" spy watch and the "Cloak and Dagger" spy watch. The Dead Ringer brings the ability to play dead for eight seconds while the second unlockable, the Cloak and Dagger spy watch, allows you to stay invisible indefinitely, but you must stay perfectly still.

Apparently now the Spy and Sniper update will be released simultaneously, which means plenty of more news in the coming days. Unfortunately while I was out of town there was a lot of news on the Sniper update, so if you want to take a look back all the updates, head on over to the recently renamed Sniper Spy Update Page. Otherwise, keep checking back here for the latest on the upcoming Spy unlockables and maps.

New Sniper Update Teaser

Posted Wednesday 6 May 2009 By: Yourcatch22 | Post a comment

In a new post on the Official Team Fortress 2 Blog, Robin Walker has given us some new information about what awaits in the upcoming Sniper Update. In particular, some new details were revealed about the new sniper rifle unlockable, which aims to increase the Sniper's proximity potency, rather than just improving his sniping skills. Checkout a snippet below:
"In an effort to reduce some of the aggravation that other players feel towards the Sniper, we chose the goal of designing an unlockable that encouraged the Sniper to get a little closer to his target. We want him to give up some of his primary advantage in return for something else, so that enemies he kills feel like they were engaged with them, and feel like they could have survived if they'd just managed to fight a little better."

New Robin Walker Interview

Posted Thursday 30 April 2009 By: Yourcatch22 | Post a comment

Shacknews has posted a new interview with Valve's Robin Walker. The interview gives some great new insight into the upcoming Team Fortress 2 sniper patch, along with other changes which are expected to be released in the coming weeks. Checkout a snippet below, and for more Read The Complete Interview Here.
"Shack: Are the head-slot items being added before the Sniper update?

Robin Walker: The plan is for the head-slot items to be out before the Sniper pack is out, but if we don't get them done in time they'll just be bundled into the pack.

Shack: How will these items work on a basic level? Will they randomly drop from players that people kill?

Robin Walker: We're going to try a few different things, but the first ones won't manifest themselves inside the game itself, because it'd allow servers to cheat the system.

Shack: Will these items carry bonuses that impact gameplay?

Robin Walker: Right now they're all cosmetic only, but it's obviously more interesting if they become more than that, so we're still thinking about that. Shipping them without gameplay changes seems like a good way to tackle the first problem, which is to ensure we don't break our silhouette based class identification. It also starts us on another path that we're interested in, which is allowing players to have some control over their appearance. "
